PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This two-part experiential workshop invites you to explore breath as both anatomy and vibration—bridging the precision of somatics with the depth of yogic tradition. Through guided practices, you’ll discover how the structures and rhythms of your body shape the ease, depth, and expressiveness of your breath.

All you need is a pillow, a yoga mat, and curiosity about the living landscape of your body.

The Anatomical Foundations of Breath

  • Learn how the three diaphragms of the torso—pelvic floor, respiratory diaphragm, and thoracic outlet—coordinate to create depth and flow in breathing.
  • Experience how the heart, stomach, and liver act as participants in breath, influencing spaciousness and ease.
  • Explore the role of carbon dioxide as a vital regulator of breath depth and rhythm.
  • Understand how postural muscles—hip flexors, spinal support, and shoulders—provide the structural foundation for breath to move freely.
  • Practices include sensing, tapping, straw blowing, and myofascial ball rolling to awaken your anatomical imagination.

Breath as Vibration and Embodied Expression

  • Recognize how tension and holding patterns restrict breath and limit your natural expressiveness.
  • Explore how breath as vibration can dissolve barriers, deepen embodiment, and restore resonance.
  • Blend the somatic insights of Western pioneers with the toning and meditative traditions of yoga, creating a holistic approach to breath.
  • Practices include vibrational sounding, guided toning, and integrated movement to expand ease and expressiveness.

Instructors

  • Matthew van der Giessen — Over 40 years of teaching in the Somatics movement, specializing in body-centered wisdom and embodied awareness.
  • Devaki Henderson — Experienced practitioner in yogic breathing and meditation, with deep study in both Canada and India.

This series is designed for anyone curious about deepening their relationship with breath—whether you are new to somatics and yoga or already experienced in body-centered practice.

Pre-registration is required for the full 2-part series, November 3rd & November 10th.
